On Apple Day , October 22nd 2011, we commemorated
Somerset’s historic victory in Brussels with the
release of a Damien Hirst designed label and box for
the 20 Year Old Somerset Cider Brandy. The four year
battle in Brussels ending with our victory and the
approving of the words Somerset Cider Brandy, against
vigorous objections from the Spanish, Italians and Scots
and the granting of a PGI, (legal EU protection for the
spirit’s geographic origins and an Appellation
Controle) is in our view about as good as it gets and the
Hirst box and label will be something to remind us of this
for years to come. |

matured in our bond in smalll oak barrels and tenderly

Many will recall seeing barrels floating ashore at
Branscombe on their televisions. We obtained, with
permission of the Receiver of Wrecks, some superb barrels
which were on their way to South Africa for filling with
their best wines. They arrived on the beach in containers
protected from sea water by Bibles in Zulu and they have
added a sophisticated oak finish to the brandy. Allier oak
is subtle and we are very pleased with the effect. |

The Somerset Cider Bus has been making its annual
pilgrimage to the Glastonbury Festival for the last
thirty-eight years. Parked near the Pyramid Stage it has
served from wooden barrels farm pressed Somerset cider and hot
spiced cider to thousands of happy festival goers every year.
In our orchards at Burrow Hill we grow 40 varieties of vintage
cider apples on more than 12,000 apple trees. In the autumn we
harvest, press, ferment and blend the apples to make our
traditional prize winning ciders.
Winner of the Supreme Championship at the Royal Bath and
West Show 2010, the UK’s oldest and biggest cider
competition.
